Kelly vs. Wilson: Breaking Down the PFL Belfast Lightweight Headliner
April 13, 2026 | Danielle Tomlinson
On April 16, 2026, the SSE Arena in Belfast plays host to one of the most intriguing lightweight matchups PFL has put together this year. Darragh "The Moville Mauler" Kelly and Jay-Jay "The Maori Kid" Wilson collide in the main event. Two finishers, two contrasting styles, and one electric home crowd make this a fight worth watching closely.
Darragh "The Moville Mauler" Kelly
Kelly is an undefeated lightweight from Moville, County Donegal, who trains under John Kavanagh at SBG Ireland. He is a pressure fighter at heart, constantly pushing forward and looking to impose his will through grappling, with four submission wins and two KO/TKOs among his stoppages. His PFL debut year in 2025 produced wins over Mike Hamel and Bakhtiyar Abdulloev, signaling that he belongs at this level. Kelly stepped in on short notice to replace injured Paul Hughes and now carries the weight of headlining a homecoming event in front of the most passionate crowd in MMA.
Jay-Jay "The Maori Kid" Wilson
Wilson is a New Zealand lightweight who trains at American Top Team in Florida and has been sharpening his craft against high-level competition for years. He carried New Zealand's flag at the 2016 IMMAF World Championships before debuting professionally in Bellator in 2018, where he made an immediate impression by knocking out Sergio de Bari in just 20 seconds and later TKOing Pedro Carvalho. In PFL, he stopped Mads Burnell in round three before dropping a decision to Archie Colgan in 2025. Wilson arrives in Belfast with something to prove and the tools to do it.
Stylistic Matchup
Kelly's relentless forward pressure and grappling-first approach will push Wilson into defensive positions early and often, and how Wilson handles that pressure could define the entire fight. Wilson is not without answers on the feet: his KO of DeBari showed elite-level striking timing, and his submission background means the ground is not automatically Kelly's territory. If Kelly can chain his takedowns and control position, his submission game becomes a constant threat across all three rounds. Wilson's path to victory likely runs through his ability to generate distance, land his best shots on the feet, and avoid being smothered by Kelly's forward aggression. This is the kind of stylistic puzzle that makes a PFL Belfast main event prediction so difficult to call with confidence.
Stakes
Neither man is fighting for a title here, but a win at this level, in this setting, carries real weight in the PFL lightweight division. Kelly cementing an undefeated record against a proven finisher in his own backyard would be a statement that puts the entire division on notice. Wilson snapping back from a 2025 loss with a performance win over the undefeated home favorite would reestablish his credentials and push him back toward the top of the division conversation.
PFL Belfast airs live on ESPN2 with the main card starting at 7 PM ET on April 16, 2026. The SSE Arena will be packed and loud, the stakes are real. Do not miss it.
