- PFL 4 Airs Thursday Night, July 11 on ESPN2, ESPN+, and in Spanish on the ESPN App
- 10 Fights in the Welterweight and Women’s Lightweight Divisions Will Determine Who Makes the Playoffs and Who Goes Home
The Professional Fighters League (PFL), the first organization ever to present MMA through a Regular Season, Playoffs and Championship format, is taking over Atlantic City for the second half of the 2019 season, starting with PFL 4 on July 11th at Ocean Casino Resort. PFL 4 features the second fights for a stacked Welterweight division and the first-ever Women’s Lightweight division and is the final chance for fighters to earn points in the standings and clinch a playoff spot.
PFL 4 begins at 5:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+, then the action continues on ESPN2 and in Spanish on the ESPN App at 8:30 p.m. ET. The PFL will again integrate its SmartCage technology into the broadcast experience, delivering dynamic, real-time fighter performance data and analytics that brings fans inside the cage like never before.
On ESPN2, Kayla Harrison returns to the cage and can clinch a playoff spot with an early stoppage against U.S. Army veteran Morgan Frier, who is in a win-or-go-home scenario. Harrison, the two-time Olympic Judo Gold medalist, moved to 4-0 following a unanimous decision victory in PFL 1 over Larisa Pacheco, but it was the first time Harrison had to go the distance in her career. Harrison currently sits in second place in the Women’s Lightweight division with 3 points.
Atop the division is former Strikeforce and Invicta FC Bantamweight champion Sarah Kaufman, who was the only Women’s Lightweight to secure a finish at PFL 1, earning 6 points. Kaufman can clinch the top spot with a stoppage in any round against Roberta Samad. Samad will look to remain undefeated in her MMA career, coming off a decision win at PFL 1 versus Moriel Charneski that vaulted her into third in the standings.
The final fight of the night features returning Welterweight champion Magomed Magomedkerimov taking on a hungry and confident PFL newcomer in Chris “Action Man” Curtis. “Maga-Million” has won nine straight fights, including a first-round guillotine choke submission of John Howard at PFL 1. Curtis enters PFL 4 on an eight-fight win streak, including an impressive third-round TKO of Andre Fialho that earned him 4 points.
ESPN+ features a battle for the top spot in the Welterweight division - Sadibou Sy against Glaico Franca. Sy registered the third-fastest stoppage in PFL history with his devastating 17-second liver kick KO of David Michaud at PFL 1. The early stoppage earned him 6 points. Franca, a PFL newcomer, also scored 6 points with his first-round submission of Gamzat Khiramagomedov at PFL 1. If their fight reaches the second round, Magomedkerimov can take the top seed depending on the outcome of his fight.
ESPN+ will feature the exclusive PFL 4 Pre-Show on Wednesday, July 10th at 6:30pm ET, to prepare fans for all of Thursday’s regular season action. ESPN+ will also feature the exclusive PFL 4 Post-Show, live immediately following the event.
Calling the live action for PFL 4 will be play-by-play announcer and 2018 PFL Light Heavyweight champion, Sean O’Connell. Alongside O’Connell serving as color analysts will be UFC Hall-of-Famer, Randy “The Natural” Couture, and former UFC Lightweight, Yves Edwards. Caroline Pearce will host the nights action, and former WWE Ring Announcer Lilian Garcia will introduce fighters to the cage as the In-Cage Announcer of the PFL.
ESPN.comcoverage of PFL 4 includes a story from Brett Okamoto analyzing the approach being taken by PFL fighters and trainers who are fighting for a Playoff spot, a video feature of Los Angeles Rams star RB and PFL fan Todd Gurley training with Sadibou Sy and a “Five Things to Watch” PFL 4 preview. ESPN.com has also broken down the key stats in the PFL this season and highlighted the key fights this summer that could determine playoff seeding.
